Sissinghurst Castle Garden

Sissinghurst Castle Garden

These 13 photographs were taken on June 17th, 2001. These gardens were created by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson. If you would like to know more about Sissinghurst I can highly recommend a beautifully photographed book called "Gardening at Sissinghurst" by Tony Lord.

The first three pictures are of the Purple Border in the Top Courtyard.

In this photo you can see the lupin 'Blue Jacket' in the foreground with the big spiky, silvery Cynara cardunculus behind.

Rose 'Adam Messerich'?

I took this photo of Geranium 'Mrs. Kendall Clark' because it grows as large as the roses next to it in England--it doesn't get that big in Iowa!

My favorite rose, David Austin's English rose 'Constance Spry'. Mine at home isn't quite this stupendous yet--it had two blooms this year!

The next five photos are of the famous White Garden.

Vista through the wrought iron fence from the white garden (into the Erechtheum?)

Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Crowborough'

Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Crowborough'

(From front to back) Lathyrus latifolius 'albus', Deutzia magnifica, floribunda rose 'Iceberg'

A shot of white lupins (possibly 'Noble Maiden'). The wonderful arbor which is covered in Rosa mulliganii was not yet in bloom.

Two other views from different areas of the gardens.

The last photo is a view taken from the top of the tower by my cousin, Susan Thacker. I believe it is in the direction of the rose garden and curved Powys Wall.

Argyranthemium foeniculaceum grown as standards. I believe this was a view from the Moat Walk, toward the tall yews in the Cottage Garden.
